In 2020, Netflix subscribers first discovered Emily in Paris, the new series from Sex and the City creator Darren Starr. the pitch Adventures of an American woman obsessed with fashion and marketing in the capital of France. Clichéd but surprisingly charming, the series gave international audiences the chance to meet Lucas Bravo.
For four years, the French actor played Gabrielle on screen, a talented chef and neighbor of the heroine played by Lily Collins, who ends up falling under his spell. If we can talk about a real romance between the audience and the series from the very beginning of the adventure, the 36-year-old actor today expresses disappointment.
“I really broke up with him”
In an interview with the American media IndieWire As part of the promotion for Libre (out November 1st on Prime Video), Lucas Bravo has been tight-lipped about the direction of the Netflix series and the writing of his character:
“There was a lot of me in him in the first season. But from the moment they took away what was going on around him, always making himself a victim and being manipulated by the whole world, it became less fun for me to shoot or film. You see a character that I love so much and gave me so much, slowly. -Slowly turns into guacamole.
It must be said that for four seasons, the character of Gabriel has lost his imagination and brilliance, lives only in the shadow of Emily and waits for only one thing: to return to her arms.
If his wish came true in the 4th season, the young man was deceived by Camille at the same time. Before breaking an American’s heart, in a very (too?) tearful scene. What his translator regrets:
“I spent seasons trying to bring nuance, but we don’t have a lot of freedom on set. We can’t change a word or an emotion. They know what they want and we have to deliver it. I’m wondering if I want to be a part of season 5 because my contract ends in season 4 .
I really want to see Gabriel become funny, cheeky, cheerful and lively again. Because three seasons of playing a melancholic, sad, depressed and lost person is no longer funny. It’s a comedy, everyone around me is having fun, everyone is jumping, and I’m slowly sinking into God knows what.
“There is a lack of risk”
If Emily in Paris is the series everyone hates but secretly adores, it’s because it’s a product. “guilty pleasure” Absolute. We know what to expect from one season to the next, and we are happy to be served by its hero, which is completely out of line with reality: we look at it with its colorful costumes, its incredible love stories, its vision of Paris and its beautiful scenery. A recipe that Netflix doesn’t want to change, as Bravo confirms:
“They’re probably catching on to something they couldn’t measure, and it’s so successful that now they’re very careful not to change the recipe and keep it as it was. The road is carefully paved. No, I’m going back.
The second part of the 4th season, which was released last September, surprised us greatly by moving the action to Italy and breaking the routine in which the series has settled. A welcome change of scenery and atmosphere that may not last into season 5 has already been announced. And that’s a shame.
