Preparation for the essay
From the age of 15, when she was attending the first year of high school at a private school in Santo André (SP), the young woman has already started taking Enem. She took the exam for five consecutive years – two as a trainer and three as a coach – until she reached a thousand and also got a place on her desired course.
In high school she attended writing courses and, once this phase was completed, she attended another two years of courses, during which she also practiced writing. However, he says he only took writing Enem more seriously last year. “I realized how important it was to the final grade.”
From that moment on, Luana began to write texts more frequently and wanted to understand all the details of the writing and the corrections to improve herself. “My grades became much more challenging. And I forced myself to write. Even though I was tired, I did it, even though I didn’t like the subject, I did it, so I started seeing it as an obligation” , he says.
In the first semester of 2023, the student wrote one essay per week. In the second semester he increased it to two and tried to work on his agility in writing texts, since he had already learned to structure it throughout the year. He also had the support of private practical writing lessons.

Secrets and tips for getting top marks
The theme of the Enem 2023 essay, in which the student achieved a score of one thousand, was “Challenges in addressing the invisibility of care work performed by women in Brazil”. Luana believes that it was a combination of factors that earned her the maximum score. Among the “secrets”, the student highlights:
- Practice writing essays regularly.
- Valuable grammar lessons, covered by the Enem 1 skill, which requires mastery of the formal written form of the Portuguese language. Luana studied the theory, watched video lessons on the topic and solved several entrance exam questions to understand the topic in practice. Check out all the skills assessed in the Enem essay here.
- You see the essay as a structure that starts from one point and has to get to another point, but already knowing where it will go. “Before writing the essay, you have already defined in a draft what your writing path will be so that you can write the text in a logical way. It is very difficult and it was precisely practice that made me understand this point well, which is this song, the topic”, explains the young woman.
- Understand the structure of the Enem essay well: introduction, development and conclusion; See here how to write an essay step by step.
- Knowing that everything can be used as repertoire for the text. “Your history lesson is a repertoire, the song you heard yesterday can be a repertoire, even your series […] and I have always liked using repertoires that are easier for me and that I had in my head due to my knowledge of the world. I didn’t like using what I didn’t know.”
- Don’t see the editorial team as a “monster”. “My text is very simple, it doesn’t have specific words, it doesn’t have very sophisticated connectors. It’s about doing the basics well, with coherent arguments, without using very complicated repertoires, it works. I think it’s better to choose a topic that you feel like confident in using it rather than choosing something to impress the broker.”

The last decades of the 20th century, in Brazil, were marked by the presence of several social movements, such as the breakdown of gender conditions that harmed women in the social environment. Even though the demonstrations have won rights, there are still problems that affect the daily lives of Brazilian women, such as the invisibility of care work. In reality, this issue is influenced by the capitalist system and the maintenance of the patriarchal vision. There is therefore an urgent need to resolve the challenges and address the problem.
Given this scenario, it is worth analyzing the relationship between the economic model and the aforementioned invisibility. According to the thesis of the sociologist Karl Marx, the owners of production, in capitalism, aim to make the greatest possible profit. From this author’s point of view, one notices that this economic mentality still governs current relations, including those in Brazil. Therefore, in a context in which care work does not reproduce the capital desired by companies, it is invisible and poorly remunerated. Therefore, it is evident that the capitalist system constitutes an obstacle to the problem suffered by women.
Furthermore, the permanence of the patriarchal vision accentuates the problem of this invisibility. This situation can be explained because, since the colonial period in Brazil, women were responsible for carrying out domestic and care duties, since they were not considered capable of carrying out any other occupation. In this scenario, when referring to current times, it is clear that this social convention of the role of women has been maintained as a way to continue the privilege of men, holders of power. Therefore, although they consider themselves superior, they do not fight to enhance care work, seen as an intrinsic and obligatory function of the female gender.
In short, it appears that changes are needed to address the challenges of the invisibility of care work performed by women. To this end, it is up to the legislative power, as holder of the legal means of transformation, to create laws that make decent remuneration for this work with inclusion in the market mandatory, as well as regulating its evaluation. This proposal will have to be approved through a debate in the Chamber of Deputies and aims to put an end to the invisibility of this work. Once this is done, the issue will no longer be a problem for the Brazilian social body.
