Third chapter of the slasher franchise, which is now showing in theaters, prepares the ground for the return of the killer clown in new films

Terrifier 3 premieres in Brazilian cinemas, betting on what has been working in the franchise starring Art the Clown: very gore and banal scenes of appealing violence. However, the new feature film Damien Leonewhich is already on display, has the clear purpose of betting on the longevity of the story, introducing new characters and leaving a hook for a likely fourth chapter.

If it makes money, the films will keep coming. This is a basic and obvious premise of any franchise, studio, filmmaker and, of course, the film industry. Although, Terrifier was born as an independent project and, despite not having yet reached a status of overproduction, nowadays it is possible to classify it as a successful project, which took many curious people to the cinema. In fact, it is worth including Art the Clown between the icons slasher in recent years, something that has been consolidating with each new chapter of its saga splatter.

The subgenre — also known as gore — is essentially what makes the reputation of Terrifier. From graphic representations of blood and violence through special effects, a morbid interest is created in the viewer in the vulnerability of the human body and the theatricality of its mutilation. A large part of the public is driven to movie theaters by the curiosity caused by the accurate marketing that reports sessions in which people felt sick, vomited and even fainted due to the level of violence of the deaths.

art He is an immortal and immoral sadist about whom, until now, not much is known. If the second film gives a quick explanation about it — it’s a good idea to watch it before venturing into this one —, Terrifier 3 invest more scenes in the character Vicky (Samantha Scaffidi), who became a kind of partner in crime for artand also in a new family nucleus.

The new film takes place five years after the massacre that Art the Clown caused the Halloween seen in the previous feature. The brothers Sienna (Lauren LaVera) and Jonathan Shaw (Elliott Fullam) are still struggling to rebuild their lives: she, with a new family, and he, dedicated to his studies.

As the end of the year approaches, they try to embrace the Christmas spirit and leave the horrors of the past behind. But just when they think they’re safe, Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) returns, determined to turn the joy of the holiday into a new nightmare.

In the new, Damien Leone tries to escape from gore for the gore or violence for violence’s sake, placing the final girlSienna in an environment that was new for us and comforting for her. Despite this, what Terrifier 3The most interesting thing is precisely the moments when Art the Clown plays with Christmas moments, like when he meets Santa Claus in a bar, resulting in one of the most hilarious scenes in the film, or when he dresses up as Santa Claus and serves children in a shopping mall, moments that always culminate in deaths and a lot of violence.

However, the most inventive of Terrifier 3 nor is the level of this violence which, in my opinion, does not go much further than what has already been shown in previous chapters of the franchise — despite all buzz about them — but in how Damien Leone sets the story in a festive holiday like Christmas. Perhaps this is a very welcome possibility for future films. Terrifier: to place art on commemorative dates and see him cause chaos and such brutal killings.

It is not yet known what we can expect from a speculated Terrifier 4but the end of Terrifier 3makes it clear that the plans for Damien Leone for this clown who increasingly solidifies himself as an icon of slasher, are still far from over. It remains to be seen what time of year art will attack again.
