Despicable Me 3: How were the minions created?

For more than 12 years, wearing blue overalls and understood only by themselves, the Minions have inhabited the dark rooms and the Despicable Me franchise until they stole the show from Gru, their Machiavellian employer.

Originally, as their creator Eric Guyon told us at the Annecy Festival in 2017, they were absolutely not supposed to occupy such an important place in the film and were simply formed to embody Gru’s character:

“They were created because initially there was just a pitch with the villain. And to make it interesting, we needed to create a situation.”– the director told us. “To create interaction in your painting, you put in little tricks that serve to enhance the big bad. It helps me tell the story, and we need that, and I think that’s how we should build things.”

Eric Guion had no idea that the minions would become real international stars, get two spin-offs in the cinema and become the mascots of the Illumination studio, so Eric Guion was happy to create these little characters using very accurate imagery:

“Initially they were little French workers, with overalls, cigarettes in their mouths, berets. Renault workers as we imagined them in the 1940s. There was already the idea of ​​clones, they were small, numerous, and then that was it. It evolved.”

Therefore, inspired by the French workers working in the famous garage, the director of Minions gave life to these famous associates.
