HBO has released the first subtitled teaser for the series “The Idol”, co-created and starring The Weeknd. The preview features lots of sex, drugs and choreography, as well as an atmosphere of neon decadence characteristic of the production co-creator, Sam Levinson, responsible for “Euphoria”.

The plot of “The Idol” follows a pop singer who begins a romance with a self-help guru and club owner in Los Angeles, unaware that he is the leader of a secret cult.

The protagonist is played by Lily-Rose Depp (“Travelers”), daughter of stars Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, while the guru is embodied by The Weeknd.

The original cast also includes singers Troye Sivan (“Boy Erased”), Debby Ryan (“Insatiable”) and Tunde Adebimpe (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”), as well as Rachel Sennott (“Shiva Baby”), Hari Nef ( “Country of Violence / Assassination Nation”), Maya Eshet (“Teen Wolf”), Melanie Liburd (“This Is Us”), Steve Zissis (“Happy Birthday 2”), Elizabeth Berkley (“Saved by the Bell”), Nico Hiraga (“Outstanding”), Anne Heche (“Hung”) and … Kim Jennie of the K-pop band BLACKPINK, seen unannounced in the teaser.

The behind-the-scenes production was tense, as director Amy Seimetz (“I’ll Die Tomorrow”), who would direct the six ordered episodes, left the project in the midst of creative conflicts. Subsequently, HBO confirmed that the job would be redone, including cast changes: Debby Ryan took over from Suzanna Son (“Red Rocket”).

With Seimetz’s departure, Levinson took a more active role in the production, including directing the episodes, which earned their visual mark, as can be seen from the teaser.
