Unlike Nino, André and Alexsander, Marcelo ends his mandate at the Tricolor after having terminated the contract, by mutual agreement
Almost a year after winning the Libertadores, Fluminense has already undergone some changes in its squad. This is because five characters who were part of the victorious campaign of South America’s main club competition are no longer part of the group. These are defender Nino, as well as midfielders André, Alexsander, coach Fernando Diniz and, more recently, Marcelo.
The defender was sold to Russian Zenit in January this year for five million euros (around 27 million reals at the price at the time). In Alexsander’s case, he suffered a serious injury to his left knee last year. Then the young athlete failed to repeat his best performance. Until he received an interesting offer from Al Ahli, Saudi Arabia, and accepted due to the uncertain scenario and good remuneration.
As for André, the midfielder already had an agreement with president Mário Bittencourt to leave the team this season. Thus, Tricolor accepted an offer from Wolverhampton, from England. The onslaught of a Premier League club can be explained by his importance in both Laranjeiras and a spell in the Seleção.
Fluminense has decided to sell him for 22 million euros (approximately R$ 135.5 million at the price of the period), the largest sale in its history. The penultimate start was that of coach Fernando Diniz, who accumulated negative results. As a result, the team ended up in the relegation zone of the Brazilian championship. After a period without a club, the commander is currently at Cruzeiro. The next player to end his stay at the Tricolor should be Felipe Melo, who is close to ending his career.
Chaotic meeting at Fluminense
The clash between Mano and Marcelo, in Fluminense’s draw against Grêmio, last Friday (01/11), is not an unprecedented episode. In fact, the two had already had a conflict when the coach led the Brazilian team, irritated by the left-back’s stance in 2011.
After relationship problems at the Seleção, the two met again at Fluminense this season. In fact, there was another argument last Friday (01/11) on the sidelines. By mutual agreement, Marcelo and the club came to the conclusion that the ideal solution would be to break the contract. In his second experience at the Tricolor, the left back played 68 games, contributing with five goals and three assists. He was in the Tricolore in 2006 and then moved to Real Madrid.
After the publication of the Tricolore to communicate the termination of the contract, the striker Douglas Costa intervened in defense of the number 12.
“Marcelo is a relic! The rest is history!”, underlined another former Fluminense player.
Douglas was also part of Rio’s squad this year, having been signed in January. However, he had a decent transition and played little. The striker lost space and chose to leave the club in July.
