Obi-Wan Kenobi continues to defend the Star Wars prequels and is clear that the critics suffered from unrealistic expectations.
After some time I think we can say that the latest Star Wars trilogy has been, to say the least, disappointing for both fans and critics. There are few people happy with the end of the Skywalker Saga. Its alarming lack of originality and its simple copies of the original trilogy has increased exponentially the voices that still defended the, at the time, highly criticized prequels. The “at least the prequels were original and expanded the Star Wars universe well” has grown like a ball and now, at least it seems, there are more defenders of the prequels than their critics.
Ewan McGregor, the Obi-wan Kenobi of the prequels is not exactly a convert, he has always been on the side defending the films that made him a Jedi Master. We have to admit that his ‘Obi-wan Kenobi’ series, which has pitted him against Anakin/Darth Vader, has also received love and hate from fans. Time will tell, but now is the time to defend the prequels.
In an interview with GQ, McGregor seemed pretty clear on why the prequels have been improving in critical reception over time. If the most recent trilogy erred in wanting to resemble the original too much, the problem with the prequels was the opposite.
At first, all we really heard was the bad side of things. That was the only voice I remember hearing, and I didn’t like it. I think the critics just wanted to feel like they were seven or eight again, and they didn’t get that. So I stayed with that reaction for years and years, and it took me a while of meeting people to realize how important our movies have been to them.
McGregor also acknowledged that his relationship with the prequels has changed.
I think my relationship with them has changed as I’ve met more people in that generation. I admire George for trying to do something different with them. He didn’t just set out to make three more ‘Star Wars’ movies that felt like the originals. He respected him for it. I think it’s bold and interesting.
Technically, ‘Obi-wan Kenobi’ was a limited series that has already concluded its run on Disney +, but it is increasingly rumored that a season 2 could be on the way.
