The November 5 election marathon in the United States begins with the opening of the first polling stations on the East Coast and crosses six time zones, from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
Unless an unexpected red or blue wave immediately indicates a clear winner, there is a real possibility that it will take days to determine America’s next president.
See below the closing times of the polls in the 50 American states and in the capital Washington, always according to the Brasilia time zone.
9pm 5/11: South Carolina, Georgia (one of the swing states), Indiana, Kentucky, Vermont and Virginia.
9:30pm: North Carolina (another swing state), Ohio and West Virginia.
10pm: In total, 17 states close to voting right now, including crucial Pennsylvania, the state most contested by Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. The others are Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Rhode Island and Tennessee, as well as the capital Washington.
10.30pm: Arkansas.
11 p.m.: Three more swing states — Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin — close the polls, as well as Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, New Mexico, Texas and Wyoming.
0h 6/11: Montana, Nevada (last undecided state to complete the vote) and Utah.
1 hour: California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
2:00: Hawaii.
3am: Alaska, last state to close the polls. .
