Congress advances sessions and suspends the agenda of meetings of the presidents of the G-20 parliaments

The event will take place between November 6th and 8th in Brasilia; during the period only deputies, senators, invited authorities, summoned officials and collaborators and accredited press will have access to the building

THE Senate and the Chamber of Deputies will host the 10th Summit of the P-20, a group that brings together the presidents of the parliaments of the countries of G-20 between Wednesday 6th and Friday 8th. With the week shortened by the event, the House brought forward the discussion on the supplementary bill regulating parliamentary amendments to the Union Budget to the beginning of this week.

The vote on the text, scheduled for Monday 4th, is considered fundamental for the implementation of the parliamentary amendments, which is blocked by decision of Minister Flávio Dino, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), until the National Congress and the government give transparency for transfers. The Three Powers have been negotiating an agreement since August.

Access to the Congress Palace will be narrowed down during the meeting, which will see the participation of 35 parliamentarians from 14 countries. Only deputies, senators, invited authorities, public officials and invited collaborators and the press accredited to follow the event will have access to the venue. The presidents of the House and Senate, Arthur Lira (PP-AL) e Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), will participate in the meeting.

“There have been 60 invitations and we have more than 30 confirmed delegations. Each of them has four to eight representatives. This is a big and very important event. This sets the tone for the responsibility of the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate in taking the P-20 summit in Brazil and Brasilia this year,” the director general of the Chamber of Deputies, Celso de Barros Correia Neto, said in a statement.

With the change in calendar, Congress will not have votes during the days of the event. In addition to the discussion on the amendments, 13 other proposals are on the agenda. The agenda for Tuesday’s session has not yet been published. House committee-related activities were also suspended during P-20.

Last week, Senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO) criticized Congress for not working on the days of the event. “Here there is little work: it’s a parliamentary break, it’s an election, it’s a run-off, nobody comes on Monday, nobody comes on Friday. So what will happen? I’m sorry for the outburst”, he stated on Wednesday 30th during the meeting of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) into the manipulation of games and sports betting.

The theme of the meeting will be “Parliaments for a just world and a sustainable planet”. The forum will discuss topics such as female representation in decision-making spaces, women’s economic autonomy, gender and racial inequality, and climate change. The event will also discuss how legislatures should act to fight hunger, poverty and inequality, as well as the role of parliaments in building global governance adapted to the challenges of the 21st century.

Brazil is the current president of the G-20 and will host its next meeting in Rio de Janeiro on November 18. During the meeting, South Africa will assume the presidency of the group.
