In Miami, Daniel Lugo, a sports trainer, would do anything to live the American dream and enjoy, like his rich clients, the best that life has to offer: luxury houses, racing cars and dream girls… Give him every chance to achieve. To succeed, he devises a simple and (almost) perfect plan: steal one of his richest clients and… steal his life. He brings with him two accomplices, Paul Doyle and Adrian Dorball, who are so easily influenced, so ambitious…
When Michael Bay meets the Coen brothers
A far cry from the pyrotechnic effects and other CGI that have become his Hollywood trademark, Michael Bay gave himself a surprising break in 2013 with No Pain No Gain. A small independent production with a modest budget of $26 million. Suffice it to say, straws for those more accustomed to juggling budgets that happily flirt with $200 million.
With plenty of self-deprecation and dark humor, Bay delivers his version of the other side of the American dream. And hit hard! Or how three steroid-addicted bodybuilders, a babe and cash become kidnapper-lovers until things spiral out of control. A complete reversal of the false, gruesome and bloody completely authentic cases of 1994-1995, which in the end could have been just one news among others.
Mark Wahlberg brings some sparks as Daniel Lugo, supported mostly by Dwayne Johnson, who has probably never been this good, far from all his toy tics and eyebrows with a cricumflex accent. The excellent Anthony Mackie, in an impressive performance as Adrian Dorball, brings this pathetic trio to the rear in a downward and hellish spiral, the outcome of which is in no doubt.
No pain no gainTo watch (or re-watch!) on Netflix… Hurry! It will be released from the catalog on November 11.
