Godzilla isn’t done roaring on the big screen. Associated with King Kong on the big screen this year, the famous giant lizard also made its way to Hollywood in March and won the Oscar for best special effects thanks to Minus One, the opus from Japan that caused a worldwide sensation.
Precisely in the quality of its visual effects, but also in the way it connects to the essence of Kaiju, a metaphor for the fear of nuclear power that Japan lived in in 1954, the year of the release of the first opus, only nine years. After the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II.
Made for just $15 million, Godzilla Minus One grossed $116.4 million worldwide. It helped well during the visit to American soil, with little competition on the road due to the actors’ and screenwriters’ strike that was still raging. Add to those numbers very positive reviews and an Oscar win, and it’s no surprise that a sequel was announced on Friday, November 1, the creature’s 70th anniversary, while the feature film was returning to theaters around the world in its original version. Black and white is called minus color.
The film’s director, Takashi Yazamaki, will return behind the camera for this new opus, about which we still know nothing. Neither its story nor its title. Since the title Minus One hinted at the fact that the story took place before the plot of the original Godzilla, will this be a prequel titled Minus Two? Or a sequel set a few days/hours before the first movie, called Godzilla Zero?
Answer, perhaps on Godzilla’s 71st birthday in November 2025. Even the release date of this new movie is still unknown to us.
