There is more than one candidate…
Here are spoilers for the third season of ‘The Boys’
The third season of ‘The Boys’, the wild Amazon Prime Video series, has come to an end and it has been arguably the wildest ride the series has taken us on so far. And that is a lot to say.
Between the beginning of ‘The Boys S3’ with the craziest sex in history, the herogasm (here you also have why ‘Herogasm’ is the best episode of ‘The Boys’), the octopus fetish of Profundo and the With A-Train’s disturbing twist on ‘The Boys’ going too far, you have to wonder what else is going through Eric Kripke’s mind.
Now what the fourth season of ‘The Boys’ is going to start shooting this August, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be long before we find out either. So prepare yourself.
One thing we do know, however, is that will involve another ploy to kill Antony Starr’s Patriotwhich is basically a kind of Superman if he was an evil little shit.
Carnicero and The Boys (and now Annie) have been trying to end the Seven leader’s reign of terror since the show’s debut, and while it did seem like they had him in their hands for a bit, sadly he’s still alive.
Nevertheless, Kripke has stated that the series will not end until the blue-eyed super is laid to rest for good..
“There’s no way the series is going to end without Patriot dying,” he told Metacritic. “I’m not comfortable with keeping that guy alive in the universe. We have to do something.”
We know Patriot has to die, and frankly, we’re not sure how many more seasons this plot-and-fail formula to kill him can last.
So the question is, Who is going to be the one to finally finish off Patriota?
These are the possible candidates.
Black Noir (2.0)
We know, we know. Black Noir was killed at the hands of Patriot something that, by the way, many of us interpret in how ‘The Boys’ fails Black Noir with a surprising twist.
It was a shocking turn of events given that the silent superhero remained loyal to his leader no matter (and we mean no matter) anything.
The seventh-episode Looney-Tunes skit solved the mystery by revealing that the Seven’s previous leader, Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), was an even bigger asshole than Patriot and that Noir helped stop him, Captain America-style.
But when Noir admits that he knew Soldier Boy was Patriot’s biological father all along, Patriot rips out his entrails in a gruesome fashion and leaves him to die while his fellow cartoons comfort him.
But this is not the end of Black Noir. Not at all.
As we said, Nathan Mitchell will be a new character in ‘The Boys 4’:
“It’s definitely not the last we’ve seen of Black Noir as a hero.” “It’s just that the guy who was inside [del traje de Noir] in the third season, he is gone. But we have Nathan [Mitchell] playing a really interesting and hilarious character who wears the suit in the next season.”
Fans of the comics will recognize that the Black Noir in the series is not the same as the one in the panels. The Noir from the comics is actually a clone of Patriot, created by Vought as a backup plan in case his superstar went rogue.
The silent assassin ends up killing Patriot, and is able to do so because he has the same lethal abilities as Patriot.
Of course, Kripke has stated that Mitchell will play Noir 2.0, ruling out the Patriot-clone look. But who’s to say that Vought didn’t just clone Patriot’s powers and not the whole person?
As we already know, Vought likes to maintain a good reputation, and putting someone else in Noir’s suit will be his way of hiding his death from the public.
But Patriot killed him before Soldier Boy showed up, so surely it would have been easier for them to just say that Noir died sacrificing himself with Queen Maeve.
Or they could put someone else in the suit who is actually compatible with Patriot and, as a member of The Seven, can be near him at all times with no questions asked.
So maybe Noir 2.0 is the answer to Patriot’s eventual demise…
Ryan
That’s right, Patriot’s son.
In the first season, viewers discovered that, years earlier, Patriot had raped Butcher’s wife, Becca (Shantel VanSanten), causing her to disappear while pregnant.
Ryan, the result of that pregnancy, was revealed to be a super from birth instead of having been injected with Compound V like the others.
Cameron Crovetti’s character possesses much of the same abilities as his father, including thermal vision and, more recently, flight. And for that he is the ideal opponent.
As stated, Noir was able to kill Patriot in the comic because he was a clone and they had the same powers. Ryan may not be a clone, but he and Patriot share the same DNA, similar abilities, and he’s proven to be quite deadly, even when that hasn’t been his intention.
The extent of her powers was first revealed in the season two finale, when she roasted Stormfront (Aya Cash) after he threatened to kill her mother, though Becca was also caught in the crossfire.
Kripke has also explained that, in a fit of rage, Ryan is even more powerful than his father.
“When Ryan gets angry enough, the strength of Ryan’s lasers – which were surprisingly powerful – are much more powerful than even Patriot’s,” he told TVGuide.
With Trooper down (again), it seems like he’s the only other super powerful enough to kill Patriot…if he’s willing to.
Becca went to great lengths to protect her son from his psychopathic father, and did a pretty good job of raising a sweet boy who is into playing with Legos.
But with the guilt of his mother’s death, Butcher driving him away as a result, Patriot as a father, and Soldier Boy as a grandfather, the boy is bound to be a bit chaotic.
If his evil grin when Patriot killed a “Believe Starlight” protester in the season three finale is any indication, he could be the new big bad of season four.
However, if Butcher manages to bring him back into the light (albeit in the shadows), then perhaps he and The Boys can convince Ryan to help them take down Patriot once and for all.
Butcher
Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) is certainly no angel, but it would be very satisfying to see him finally kill Patriot.
Butcher’s hatred and desire for revenge towards the monster that hurt his wife are the basis on which the entire premise of ‘The Boys’ is based.
The fact that his days are literally numbered after the events of the third season means that the fourth season could very well be the final stretch of the series.
The brave superhero hunter has nothing to lose now, and he’ll probably be even more motivated to prevent his wife’s son from becoming another super evil, now that he’s sided with his real father.
So it wouldn’t be surprising if Butcher filled himself with more V for one last fight with his adversary and we got to see them fight to the death, ending the series’ main conflict.
