The Pole was defeated by the American Gauff, who qualified for the semi-final
Polish Iga Swiatek, world number 2 in the current ranking, lost on Tuesday at the WTA Finals against American Coco Gauff, who guaranteed the ranking leadership to Aryna Sabalenka at the end of the 2024 season. Gauff confirms her ranking in the semifinals.
With the current results, Iga will no longer be able to catch Sabalenka, even if she wins a possible title in the prestigious tournament to be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In the updated scenario, Sabalenka has 9,416 points, while the Pole has 8,170 points.
Coco Gauff, world number 3, beat Iga with a convincing 6/3 6/4 and achieved her second victory in two matches, again without losing sets, thus guaranteeing her qualification to the semi-finals of the competition, how could it not be more reached by the opponents.
Both tennis players will return to the court on Thursday. Swiatek plays for the ranking, having to beat the American Jessica Pegula, last in the group. Gauff “respects the program” facing the Czech Barbora Krejcikova, also fighting for the ranking together with Iga.
