The choice of Alexandra Lam in the title role was an obvious one for the director, who wanted to pit the film actress against the theater actress. He said about the actor:In both senses of the popular term, she’s usually the “girl next door” who can stand up to the male characters she’s about to meet and back down.“He wanted to give her a dramatic role in which she would have the energy she usually shows in comedy.”

For the purpose of the film, Eric Besnard tried to document these first teachers, but found few sources. He then examines interwar research on teachers, in particular the work of historian Mona Ozuf: “I told myself that between these two quite close eras there were many points in common in terms of living conditions and mentality. I also read novels like Zola’s Land, a work rich in lessons about the peasant world of the late 19th century.“
