As such, the director has revealed that a sequel to his 1988 film has been written, mixing live-action and animation Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
However, the latter is sure that this sequel will never see the light of day. Produced by Touchstone, a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Group, Roger Rabbit follows a private detective (played by Bob Hoskins) who is hired by the star of the big-screen animated rabbit to try to exonerate him for the murder he is accused of. The detective then leads the investigation into a world populated by animated creatures, including the statue Jessica Rabbit, Roger’s wife.

Zemeckis explains “The current Disney studio would never make Roger Rabbit today. They can’t make a movie with Jessica. A sequel script would never see the light of day, no matter how good it is. I mean, look what they did to Jessica. At the theme park.”

He adds: “We were able to make this movie when Disney was reinventing itself. We were there when they were taking the new direction and it was full of energy. I kept saying, and I honestly say, ‘I make Roger Rabbit the way I think. Walt Disney would do that.” I say that because Walt never made his movies for kids. He always made them for adults. The 72-year-old director was then asked about a possible new installment in his iconic Back to the Future trilogy. Although the latter has already refused to remake or modernize the subject of his sci-fi comedy, he expressed his desire to stage a musical comedy inspired by those films. The project follows composer Alan Silvestri and lyricist Glenn Ballard’s creation of the musical in the West End four years ago, based on the 1985 film directed by Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd.
Robert Zemeckis said he tried to pitch this potential project to Universal Pictures but was turned down. “I’d love to do a Back to the Future musical. Just like Mel Brooks did The Producers. I’d love to do that. I think it would be great… I’ve talked to the people at Universal about it. They don’t understand, so I don’t know anything I will.”
So we’re not ready to see Roger Rabbit and Marty and Doc on the big screen.
