L’Amour Ouf: A fantastic BA
Since its release on October 16, Ugh loveGilles Lellouche’s latest film quickly conquered the French public. With 3 million viewers within three weeks of release, the film has established itself as one of the greatest cinematic successes of the year.
Presented at the Cannes Film Festival last May, Ugh love cleverly mixes comedy, romance and thriller, relying on a nostalgic soundtrack, composed of iconic titles from the 80s and 90s.
One of the keys to the film’s success lies in the original soundtrack, supervised by Emmanuel Ferrier. The latter includes artists such as The Cure, Prince and Billy Idol, and required a significant investment from the producers, Alain Attal and Hugo Sélignac, who spent approximately 750,000 euros acquire the rights to use the songs. This figure, while significant, added an emotional and authentic dimension to the story, strengthening the impact of key scenes.
Gilles Lellouche had to give up a cult song
However, despite the richness of this original soundtrack, a song particularly dear to the director had to be left aside. Gilles Lellouche expressed his disappointment at the microphone of our colleagues atAlloCiné for failing to fit INXS’ “Never Tear Us Apart”, a song he considered essential to capturing the spirit of certain scenes.
The rights to use this work, which was particularly expensive (200,000 euros), represented an insurmountable obstacle for the film’s budget. Lellouche said: “There’s a piece of music that I missed because of money. It’s a song by INXS. I did without that music, but I didn’t miss it.”
Managing music rights proved to be a real headache for the team. The rights holders of some songs often impose rigorous conditions. For example, for the rights to “A Forest” by The Cure, the cost could increase if another song was purchased at a higher price. Lellouche therefore had to make strategic choices to respect the allocated budget while maintaining the musical integrity of the film.
This choice of songs had a very strong impact on the public, especially on young people, who shared their opinions a lot on TikTok, using key songs from the film, such as A Forest or Eyes Without a Face by Billy Idol.
