“You have to grow old, you have to move on, so there is always an end in sight.”
When the stars of ‘Friends’ are asked to do a new episode or a movie they have always given the same answer, Friends is about a certain time of youth when your friends are your family, and then that has to change. That’s why there simply can’t be Friends after Friends. The same idea should apply to any teen series with clear narrative ideas. For both ‘Sex Education’ and ‘Euphoria’ it will be difficult to last much longer, and the fact is that the format coming of age you should never run out of “coming”.
It is one of Netflix’s star series, but it has not said a word that the fourth season will be the last. However, the season 3 finale left everything wide open and in need of change. The success of the four, without the union of a common institute for the protagonists, will mark the duration of the series. If he manages to make the leap to a geographical diaspora of characters and to the university sphere, more seasons await us. However, it may be precisely that jump, which brings new loves and friendships as well as the end of others, is the ideal place to leave it.
There are several stars of the series who have said that they will not return. The first is Simone Ahsley (Olivia), who is now “a Bridgerton girl.” In addition to the doubt of Ncuti Gatwa, the new Doctor Who, we will not see the couple formed by Patricia Allison (Ola) and Tanya Reynolds (Lily).
It was the latter who, speaking with DigitalSpy about her departure from the series has made it very clear that everything is more a matter of time and growth, both of her character and of herself (Of course, she takes us the opposite, more or less, with friends).
I think that happens when you play teenagers, and the whole root of the series is in a particular setting like a school. You have to grow old, you have to move on, so there is always an end in sight. It’s not like ‘Friends’, for example, where you just follow these people as they grow in their lives, because this is in an institution. You have to believe that there is an end at some point. When we started, we were all, you know, super young, it was a lot of people’s first jobs. And obviously because the series was so successful, there are so many other opportunities for everyone, which is very exciting. And we know that’s the thing with the show and with playing teenagers, you can’t play a teenager forever. I am 30 years old. I couldn’t keep playing someone who is literally half your age. Even last season they were dyeing my hair to hide my gray, and I was like ‘I’m not going to fool anyone anymore!’ I will miss Lily and I will miss the gang. But I feel very good. She feels like it’s time. I felt it was my time.
Well, if Tanya Reynolds is happy, we’ll have to face it, we’re not going to see any alien sci-fi sexual fetishes in ‘Sex Education’ anymore, at least not as great as Lily’s.
