The 1990s were an absolutely blessed time for action movie lovers. A time when the brilliant director John McTiernan, a specialist in the genre, was at the helm and still in full command of his abilities. And what is sorely missing from the Hollywood landscape, which is more formatted than ever. It’s been 20 years (already…) since he hasn’t done anything…

Led by the imperious Sean Connery as Commander Ramius, with a cast strongly supported by James Earl Jones, Scott Glenn, Alec Baldwin and Sam Neill (the future Doctor Grant from Jurassic Park), this Cold War thriller is d. Elsewhere it is loosely inspired by entirely authentic news: the November 1975 mutiny of a Russian frigate called the Storojevoï, which wanted to reach Leningrad to deliver a message encouraging a new communist revolution.

It never got there because it was intercepted by the Air Force and the Baltic Fleet on the orders of the Minister of Defense at the time, who thought the frigate wanted to reach Sweden.
