The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, this Thursday congratulated the President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, on his victory in the North American elections, as well as praising him for his courage when an armed man attempted to assassinate him, and declared that Moscow is ready to talk to the republican.
In his first public comments after Trump’s victory, Putin said the president-elect behaved like a real man during his assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 14.
“He behaved, in my opinion, very correctly, courageously, like a real man,” Putin said in Sochi.
“I take this opportunity to congratulate you on your election.”
Putin also said that Trump was “persecuted from all sides” in the tumultuous election campaign, but that the Republican’s comments on Ukraine and restoring relations with Russia deserved attention.
“What was said about the desire to resume relations with Russia, to end the crisis with Ukraine, in my opinion deserves at least attention,” he said.
On the campaign trail, Trump said he would bring peace to Ukraine within 24 hours if elected, but gave no details on how he would end Europe’s biggest conflict since World War II.
“I don’t know what will happen now. I have no idea,” the Russian president said.
Asked what he would do if Trump called to suggest a meeting, Putin said he was ready to resume contact if the future Trump administration wanted, and that he could talk to the American.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday that the Russian leader remembered Trump’s words about trying to resolve the Ukraine crisis, even though he exaggerated how quickly he could do so.
Asked about Kamala Harris’ warning that Putin would eat Trump for lunch, Peskov laughingly said, “Putin doesn’t eat people.”
