Enem 2024: Inep comments on the elimination of a diabetic student after the blood sugar sensor alarm went off

National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep) intervened on Tuesday (5) on the case of a diabetic student disqualified from the national high school exam (Enem) after the blood sugar sensor he was wearing broke during the test held on Sunday (3) in Sobradinho, Rio Grande do Sul. The incident had repercussions on social media after the young man’s father shared the situation.

In a statement, Inep explained that this allows”use of an electronic glucose measuring device for Enem 2024 participants who reported having diabetes at the time of registrationAccording to the institute, in these cases, the device must be kept in the storage bag and used by the candidate in case of need. Furthermore, Inep informs that candidates who felt damaged during the test can ask for a new application, scheduled for December 10th and 11th.

Type 1 diabetes and the elimination situation

The student’s father reported on social media that his son has type 1 diabetes, a condition in which the body produces little or no insulin, requiring constant monitoring of blood sugar levels. The teenager wears a blood glucose sensor on his arm, connected to his cellphone, which sounds an alarm when glucose levels are out of range.

According to the report, the young man’s cell phone was with the security guard during the test, when the sensor alarm went off. Even with just one ring of the alarm, the student was eliminated from “disturb other students” and removed from the room. The young man also had to sign an elimination form and was forced to leave the testing site.

INEP could face a compensation request

For the lawyer Bruno Rodartespecialist in Administrative Law, in an interview with radio Itatiaia, the student has the basis for requesting compensation for moral damages in court. “There is a flagrant and evident offense to the honour, personality and image of this student due to the various ways in which he was unmasked, including by the media, due to this act carried out to his detriment“, said Rodarte. He emphasizes that the analysis of a possible action must take into account all the particularities of the case, including the justification for the elimination and the possible request for a special room, as well as the medical reports that based the requests made by the student.
