After a two-year hiatus, the Yellowstone broadcast is finally getting ready to resume. The first part of season 5 of the western series ended in early 2023, and filming of part 2 was delayed several times due to the writers’ strike.
This period also allowed Kevin Costner to leave the program, a decision motivated by his strained relationship with series creator Taylor Sheridan. In an interview he gave us recently, John Dutton’s interpreter said that he is ready to return, provided that the proposed scenarios suit him.
Therefore, the series will resume broadcasting without the main actor. But everyone is wondering how John Dutton will be fired from the show since the character is so central to the plot. The first part of the season ended with a big reveal, which also involved his adopted son, Jamie Dutton.
Volcanoes swirl around the ranch
The latter tried everything to get his father’s approval. But no matter if he respects his instructions or follows his own path, Jem is never able to receive the fatherly love he so desperately needs from the Yellowstone patriarch. The latter became the attorney general of Montana, but it was the governorship that he originally sought.
Although he had no political ambitions, John Dutton eventually ran for office—believing that such a prestigious position would best serve the ranch’s interests. This betrayal of the son, whom he had been instructed to put aside for the good of his father, felt like one betrayal too many.
The owners of the investment fund Market Equities, who dream of seizing the Yellowstone lands, identified Jamie as the weak link in the Dutton family. Attorney Sarah Atwood is tasked with gaining his trust by becoming his mistress. The trap is closed on the Attorney General, who now finds himself completely manipulated by his lover.
Going through John Dutton’s prison?
At first, Sarah Atwood tried to leave Beth Dutton, who was considered her father’s protege. But eventually John Dutton became the main target of the duo. There is evidence that the governor is using his position to further his ranch interests. These maneuvers make him guilty of a federal crime under American law.
These revelations gave Jamie Dutton the weapon he had been dreaming of for revenge against his father, and the last episode of the first part ended with the impeachment process against the latter. Therefore, it is unlikely that John Dutton will disappear from the series at this exact point in the story.
The most logical continuation would be for the second part of season 5 to take place a few months after this episode and John Dutton would be behind bars. However, it is possible that screenwriter Taylor Sheridan decides to kill off John Dutton, but fans will certainly not appreciate the character being sacrificed off-screen.
Still, after two years of waiting, Yellowstone fans will finally get to discover the ramifications of this new betrayal by Jamie. For that, you’ll have to tune into the second part of Season 5 on Paramount+ every week starting this Monday, November 11, which is also available on a Canal+ subscription.
