The Emirate cited “lack of will” to reach an agreement
Qatar withdrew this Saturday (9) from mediation for the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, involved for just over a year in a bloody conflict between Israel and the Islamic fundamentalist group Hamas.
According to a diplomatic source close to the matter, quoted by the local press, the emirate has decided to abandon the negotiations because the political headquarters of Hamas “no longer serves its purpose”.
“Qatar has informed both the Israelis and Hamas that as long as there is a refusal to negotiate a deal in good faith, they cannot continue to mediate,” the source revealed.
Furthermore, local media highlighted that the emirate decided to no longer welcome Hamas after strong pressure from the United States.
The small gas-rich Gulf state has a long history of mediating conflicts. Qatar has previously helped strike deals to free Americans imprisoned in Iran and Afghanistan, as well as spearheaded diplomatic progress in clashes on the African continent. .
