The structure will remain in place until the end of the monument’s restoration
The city of Rome, Italy, inaugurated this Saturday (9) a temporary walkway over the Trevi Fountain, one of the most famous monuments of the capital of the country and the world.
The structure, which will be removed only in December, when the conservation work on the eighteenth-century monument will be completed, allows tourists to see the Trevi Fountain from a different angle.
The panoramic walkway is authorized to receive around 130 people at a time, the first to walk along it was the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, during the inauguration ceremony.
“Today the walkway was inaugurated which will allow a unique view during the maintenance work, which is important and necessary for the conservation of the fountain. It will be a quick job, but being able to see the statues up close is truly extraordinary, a unique perspective”, he said the politician.
Gualtieri added that the experiment will allow the Municipality of Rome to “experiment with the management of flows” of people in the area, furthermore he specified that visitors “will not be damaged by excessive crowding”.
Tourists of different nationalities have already used the walkway throughout the day. Note that you do not need to pay to access the space, but the traditional act of coin throwing is prohibited while you are in the facility. People who break the rules will be “sanctioned”.
For this purpose the Municipal Administration has recently installed a swimming pool in front of the Trevi Fountain so that tourists can throw coins during the cleaning work. Gualtieri revealed that more than 10 thousand euros (R$ 61.3 thousand) were raised in one week.
