End of Netflix basic plan: Subscribers will be moved to the ad-supported plan

Subscribers to Netflix’s R$25.90 basic plan received an email from the streaming platform informing them that they would automatically be transferred to the standard plan with advertising, which costs R$20.90. The change was already promised last month and will take place from December 25th (a Christmas “gift”?).

In recent months, Netflix has taken significant steps to adapt its business model, particularly by integrating advertising into subscriptions. After facing financial challenges and a notable loss of subscribers in 2022, the streaming giant has stepped up its bets on monetization through advertising, helping to boost the value of its shares.

Savings on your Netflix subscription

In the message to basic plan subscribers, Netflix highlights that they will have a “30% saving” compared to the previous amount. Additionally, the version with ads brings improvements, such as higher image quality (1080p, compared to 720p for the basic option) and the ability to watch on two screens at the same time, a benefit for those who share the account with other people.

The measure is part of Netflix’s long-term strategy to diversify its revenue sources and, at the same time, recover part of the financial losses observed in previous years. With the ad-supported plan, the platform tries to attract an audience that prefers to pay a lower price, even if this means seeing advertisements while viewing content.

For customers who want to continue watching Netflix ad-free, options start at R$44.90 per month, with the standard plan offering Full HD quality and access to two simultaneous screens. For those who want even more benefits, the Premium plan, available for R$59.90, allows use on up to four devices and offers 4K quality.

Netflix releases scene sharing

Netflix has started allowing subscribers to capture and share images of specific scenes from content with a new feature called “Moments.” By saving a screenshot, the user can share it on social media, with information on the program, episode and exact date/time.

This feature was created to give users more freedom, without compromising the copyright of the content. It is gradually rolling out to iOS users around the world and is expected to arrive on Android in the coming weeks. To use the feature, however, you will need to have the latest version of the Netflix app installed on your device.
