Biden and Xi will meet in Peru on Saturday, US officials say

US President Joe Biden will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping next Saturday, likely for the last time, top US government officials, as Beijing prepares for a period with the potential for greater confrontation with Washington under Donald Trump.

The expectation is that the two leaders will discuss issues that could touch on a number of sensitive issues, including rising tensions between Washington and Beijing, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum in Lima, Peru.

It will be the first known interaction between the two since a phone call in April.

“The talks will not be easy,” said one of the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “This frankness was important in managing the relationship.”

Biden and Xi have sought to maintain relations without increasing tensions on issues ranging from Taiwan to the South China Sea, North Korea and Russia, as well as North American requests for more Chinese aid to stem the flow of fentanyl ingredients, the leading cause of overdoses in the United States.

Biden and Xi restored leaders’ talks in November last year, with greater cooperation on counter-drug efforts, but there has been little movement on bigger issues such as a possible conflict over Taiwan, the democratically governed island that China claims it as its own territory. .
