Pro-Palestinian protesters once again defy protest ban in Amsterdam

Pro-Palestinian protesters gathered again in central Amsterdam on Wednesday, defying a protest ban imposed by authorities following violence during a soccer match between local team Ajax and Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Dozens of protesters, some carrying Palestinian flags, chanted “Amsterdam says no to genocide” and “Free Palestine.”

Police arrested or removed hundreds of protesters after last week’s clashes, acting under emergency measures that expanded powers to search people in the Dutch capital.

Maccabi fans attacked a taxi and burned a Palestinian flag, only to be chased and beaten on scooters by anti-Israel gangs following an online appeal from taxi drivers, according to the Amsterdam police department.

Five people were treated in hospitals for injuries. Police escorted hundreds of Maccabi fans to their hotels.

Israeli and Dutch politicians denounced the attacks as anti-Semitic and recalled the persecution of Jews during World War II. Pro-Palestinians hit back, saying they responded to Maccabi fans’ attacks and provocations with anti-Arab songs.

Four of the 62 suspects detained during the violence remain in prison. Police are still looking for other suspects.
