The Minha Casa Minha Vida program is expected to surpass the target of 2 million new housing units built in the country by 2026, reaching 2.3 million properties, Cities Minister Jader Barbalho Filho said on Thursday.
According to him, the program is moving at a faster pace and 1.135 million new housing units have already been awarded this week.
The Ministry’s calculations indicate that Brazil has a real estate deficit of at least 6 million homes.
“We believe that the 2 million threshold should be exceeded by the end of 2026. Our forecast is that we should reach something like 2.3 million in 2026,” the minister said after the opening of the U20, a group that brings together cities of countries linked to the G20.
Asked about the need to cut federal government spending ahead of Finance Minister Fernando Haddad’s bid to hit a zero fiscal deficit target this year, Barbalho said he had received no indication that his portfolio could undergo adjustments.
According to him, the Ministry of Cities has adapted. “So far we have not had any indication (of cuts). If it is indispensable, we will make our contribution. We understand that our accounts are absolutely adequate… there is no fat in the ministry,” he added.
