Netflix will make a sequel to “Under the Waters of the Seine”

The mutant shark film was the second most watched on the platform among non-English-speaking productions in 2024

Jaws 2: The Rescue

The success of “Under the Waters of the Seine” on Netflix will continue. The actress Bérénice Bejo, protagonist of the film, revealed to the French newspaper *La Tribune* that filming will begin in September 2025. According to the actress, the sequel will be “very different”, even if the mutant shark Lilith will continue to play a central role.

Variety’s sources say the project is still in the early stages. In addition to Bejo, Nassim Lyes, who played the underwater policeman Adil, is also expected to return to the sequel, which will also see the return of director and co-writer Xavier Gens behind the camera.

Olympic success

The first film, released a few days before the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, combined action and social criticism. The plot follows the discovery of a mutant shark in the fresh waters of the Seine by a scientist, who teams up with a river policeman to try to prevent a massacre at the World Triathlon Championships, featuring Olympic swimmers in the Seine.

The plot generated comparisons with real problems faced by the city. During the Olympic period, Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo was criticized for ensuring the Seine was clean for water competitions. But a survey conducted by Tortoise Media counted eight athletes falling ill after swimming in the river, which highlighted the importance of the environmental issues addressed in the film.

New directions for the sequel

While plot details are scarce, Xavier Gens suggested in an interview with Variety that the next film could be set in a completely submerged Paris. At the end of the first film, explosions from old World War II bombs caused the river in the French capital to overflow its banks, leading Lilith’s mutant pups to populate the flooded streets.
