In his first match with Celeste, Aguirre left his mark in a sensational match in the qualifiers, at the Centenário Stadium
This Friday (15), Uruguay won again after four matches and defeated Colombia 3-2, in a great match, in the eleventh round of the South American World Cup qualifiers. The standout was striker Aguirre, who scored the Uruguayan winner on his debut, at the Centenário Stadium, in Montevideo.
Colombia opened the scoring in the first half with a beautiful free kick from midfielder Quintero. However, Celeste equalized with an own goal from Davinson Sánchez and, two minutes later, Aguirre beat goalkeeper Vargas to make the score 2-1 in favor of the hosts. In injury time the match was crazy. The Colombian team equalized with a goal from Andrés Gomés and, when everything seemed to be heading towards a draw, Ugarte, who entered the field, scored Celeste’s third goal: 3 to 2. A sensational match.
With this result the team led by Marcelo Bielsa reached 19 points, the same score as Colombia. The teams occupy second and third positions respectively.
Quintero on James Rodríguez’s day for Colombia
In the initial phase the match was quite balanced. In fact, under pressure for results and without scoring goals for more than three rounds, Uruguay recovered, but failed to create a great opportunity to open the scoring. However, Colombia, even without James Rodríguez among the starters, saw the star of Quintero shine, who scored a beautiful free kick, with a valid contribution from Rochet, the Uruguayan and Internacional goalkeeper.
Celeste’s revolt in the second half and Marcelo Bielsa’s bet shines
However, in the second half, Uruguay became more alert in attack, putting pressure on Colombia in defence. Thus, following Saracchi’s cross, the Colombian defender Davinson Sánchez tries to cut and ends up playing against his own goal: 1 – 1. The second half doesn’t take long to arrive. In a beautiful exchange of passes, Aguirre, Bielsa’s bet, receives the ball in the penalty area and shoots with no escape for Vargas: 2-1 for Celeste. However, when the match seemed to end 2-1, Colombia equalized through Andrés Gómez in the 50th minute. As soon as the ball rolls, the Uruguayan team goes on the attack and Ugarte makes it 3-2.
Next steps for selections
Now, the team led by Marcelo Bielsa will face Brazil on Tuesday (19th), in a match scheduled for 9.45pm (Brasilia time). Colombia will have a match with Ecuador, on the same day, in its dominions, starting at 8pm.
