In the 1990s, a man shocked Brazil by being responsible for the murder of seven women and the abuse of ten others in Sao Paulo. The killer is called Francisco de Assis Pereira, but he became known as the Park Maniac, because after killing the victims, he hid their bodies in the Parque do Estado, in the southern area of the capital Paulista. This whole story is told in two works: a film and a series available on Amazon Prime.

Park Maniac: main differences between the film and the series
First of all, it is important to underline that the two productions are independent, that is, they have no connection between them other than the theme. While the film is a fiction based on the story of the Park Maniac, the series chronicles the entire crime investigation process and the role of the media in directing and distorting the facts.
Film “The Maniac in the Park”
Feature film directed by Maurício Eça and starring actor Silvero Pereira, “Maniac do Parque” is a work of fiction, but which brings with it several real details, inspired by the trial that sentenced Francisco de Assis Pereira to 268 years in prison.
The narrative is set in 1998 and features two stories. One of these is fictional: that of the journalist Elena (Giovanna Grigio), who, alone, carries out the investigations into the serial murders that occurred in the Parque do Estado, in Sao Paulo. The other is that of the real-life killer, Francisco, who was working as a motorcycle courier at the time.
The film also shows all the media coverage of the case and the fear that spread in the state capital.

Unlike the film, the series “Maniac do Parque: A História Untold,” directed by Thais Nunes, is a documentary told through the eyes of survivors. Contains archive materials and unpublished testimonies from the victims.
The production revisits the case and shows the consequences that the crime has left. Furthermore, it shows the flaws in the investigation, the investigative errors and all the machismo involved, elements that made it difficult to arrest the criminal.
The series features four episodes with details on the discovery of the bodies, the search for the killer, his arrest, confession and conviction.
