COP-30 is the time for the Amazon to tell the world what we want, says Lula

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva reaffirmed on Saturday the 16th that rich countries must help finance the protection of the planet’s remaining forests.

Lula said that the Amazon is a topic in several countries around the world, but that it is finally time for the Amazon to tell the world what it needs. The opportunity will be given during COP-30, the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference, which will be held next year in Belém, Pará.

“Now the time has come for the Amazon to tell the world what we want. People must know that under every tree canopy there is a human being, a fisherman, a rubber tapper, an indigenous person, a small rural worker, there is an extractivist. And people must know that to protect our forest, its people must eat. And in order for them to eat, rich countries must help finance the protection of our forest, so that the people can be protected to take care of ourselves and our people with dignity”, said Lula, at the closing ceremony of the G20 Social, in Rio de Janeiro.

The president added that the document resulting from the G20 Social is not the end of a process, but rather the beginning. He also joked that he will give a new speech and perhaps even sing during the closing show of the Global Alliance Against Hunger festival on Saturday night at Praça Mauá in central Rio.

Lula welcomes world leaders to the G20 summit to be held in the capital Rio de Janeiro on the 18th and 19th.
