During the event, which takes place on the sidelines of the G20 summit, which starts tomorrow (18) in Rio de Janeiro, the PT deputy underlined that “cities cannot pay for urban transformation alone nor can they be neglected in the new financing of the climate transition”. mechanisms”.
According to him, “unfortunately, governments are facing a huge funding gap in the Global South.”
In the final communiqué, Urban 20 launched an appeal to the G20 to implement 36 reforms on three axes: “social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty”, “sustainable development and fair energy transition” and “reform of global governance institutions” . “.
In this regard, the Brazilian president declared that “talking about governance reform also implies repudiating the destruction of wars”, adding that “the Gaza Strip, one of humanity’s oldest urban settlements, has seen two thirds of its territory destroyed by indiscriminate bombing and 80% of its health facilities no longer exist.”
Lula finally underlined that under the rubble of the Palestinian enclave “more than 40 thousand lives perished”. “There will be no peace in the cities if there is no peace in the world,” he concluded.
This year’s Urban 20 included seven cities as observers, including Freetown and Singapore, while 25 were invited by the host country, Brazil, including Guadalajara (Mexico) and Cape Town (South Africa). Launched in 2017 in Paris, the global mayor network does not include Chinese or Russian cities.
