Walter Salles’ film surpasses one million spectators and represents Brazil at the Oscars
I’m Still Heredirected by Walter Salles (Central Brazil), is the best-selling national film of 2024, according to the platform Ingresso.com. Released in cinemas on November 7th, the film led sales in its opening week and maintained the first position the following weekend, surpassing the mark of one million spectators throughout Brazil.
Based on the book of the same name by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, I’m Still Here is set in Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s, during the military dictatorship. The plot follows Eunice, played by Fernanda Torresa mother of five children who seeks answers about the disappearance of her husband, Rubens, taken by undercover police officers. The cast also features prominent names such as Fernanda Montenegro, Selton Mello, Maeve Jinkings, Antonio Saboia, Humberto Carrão and Marjorie Estiano.
The film’s performance at the box office reflects Brazilians’ growing interest in national productions. According to data from Ingresso.com52% of ticket sales for national films on the platform came from the state of Rio de Janeiro, followed by São Paulo (19.5%) and Bahia (9.4%). Furthermore, Roraima, Acre and Rondônia recorded the highest number of unique purchases for Brazilian productions.
The success at the box office also brought another Brazilian production, Noah’s Ark, to the top 5 on the weekend of November 9th and 10th, ranking fifth.
