Known for his films with bizarre plots and provocative style, Greek Yorgos Lanthimos is one of the most appreciated directors today.
With works that mix acid humor, surrealism and social criticism, Lanthimos has accumulated awards and gained public attention with each new work.
With this in mind, we decided to rank the director’s films from worst to best. As a criterion, we considered ratings from review aggregators and movie websites.
Before we start with the ranking, we chose not to include the film “O kalyteros mou filos” (2001), which Yorgos Lanthimos co-directed with Lakis Lazopoulos. The film is a Greek comedy that marks Lanthimos’ directorial debut. However, the film has very few reviews recorded.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ first solo film as director, “Kinetta” is a Greek psychological drama.
In the plot, a waitress, a BMW fan and a photographer recreate different reconstructions of a murder that took place in a hotel in Greece.
Regarding critical reception, “Kinetta” received negative reviews from the trade media in general.

An anthology film, “Types of Kindness” presents three bizarre and provocative stories. The cast includes names such as Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley.
“Types of Kindness” was well received by critics overall. Media consensus highlighted the morbid humor and cast performances as positive points.

The Greek production “Alpes” portrays a group that offers a particular service. They are hired by family or friends to represent recently deceased people and facilitate the grieving process. The cast includes Angeliki Papoulia and Ariane Labed.
“Alpes” was well received by specialized critics and won awards at film festivals.

Starring Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman and Barry Keoghan, “The Sacrifice of the Sacred Deer” is a psychological drama with elements of suspense.
In the plot, a heart surgeon (Farrell) stays in touch with a fatherless teenager (Keoghan) and introduces him to his family. However, when Martin doesn’t get the attention he craves, he plots revenge that destabilizes the family.
“The Sacrifice of the Sacred Deer” received very positive reception from critics and received numerous film award nominations.

The Greek film “Fang Tooth” revolves around a family living isolated on an estate. Parents keep their children in a distorted, over-controlling reality, without information from the outside world.
Praised by critics, “Canine Tooth” won the Prix Un certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival and received a nomination for best foreign language film at the Oscars.

The comedy-drama “The Lobster” has big names in the cast: Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Olivia Colman, Ariane Labed, John C. Reilly and Léa Seydoux. The plot takes place in a future where singles are forced to find a partner in 45 days. If they fail, they are transformed into an animal of their choice.
“The Lobster” received widespread positive reception from critics. Critical consensus praised the morbid humor, themes, and plot.

Based on a novel by Alasdair Gray, “Poor Creatures” is a morbid comedy. Emma Stone plays a young girl in Victorian London who is brought back to life after a brain transplant, with a childlike mind. The cast also includes Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe and Ramy Youssef.
“Poor Creatures” was critically acclaimed. Furthermore, the film received numerous awards, including four Oscars and two Golden Globes.

In the 18th century, a duchess (Rachel Weisz) and a servant (Emma Stone) compete to be the queen’s (Olivia Colman) favorite. This is the plot of the dark comedy “The Favourite”.
