Please note that below is a detailed plot for the first episodes of Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2, available on Paramount+. If you haven’t seen them yet and don’t want to know anything about their content, I suggest you stop reading this article right now.
Kevin Costner’s departure left no other choice. A few months ago, the legendary American actor publicly announced his decision not to resume filming Yellowstone, despite the central role of his character John Dutton in the Western series. Thus, killing the latter was the only option for the program authors.
Behind the scenes of this departure, there was extensive media coverage. Between Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan, this estrangement stems from artistic and financial disputes; The postponement of Season 5 Episode 2 due to script delivery delays eventually convinced John Dutton’s interpreter to leave the program for good.
John Dutton’s death was designed to shock fans of the series
“I went on Twitter and it’s weird to see how many people are upset about John Dutton’s death when Kevin Costner himself said he won’t be coming back to the show.” Yellowstone Director Christina Voros announced to our colleagues The Hollywood Reporter.
Many people were shocked that John was killed – and it’s perfectly normal to be shocked by his death. The heroes of the series are also shocked by his death. So, in a slightly weird way, that’s what it’s all about. No one should agree to all of this.
The second part of season 5 opens with the discovery of John Dutton’s lifeless body. The first elements of the investigation point to suicide. However, other members of the Dutton clan are convinced that their father has been murdered, and Jamie Dutton – John’s stepson – is involved in the plot.
In a recent interview, Kevin Costner revealed that he had no plans to watch the rest of the series. However, the American actor spoke about the circumstances of John Dutton’s death and was half critical of the choice to disappear by suicide. The latter also revealed that he had repeatedly suggested John Dutton’s disappearance in the past.
The director of Yellowstone thinks Kevin Costner will change his mind
When asked about Kevin Costner’s choice not to watch a Yellowstone sequel, at least director Christina Voros thinks the decision won’t be final: “We built a story together that spanned seven years from start to finish. I want to tell myself that he wants to make a decision, not just for him, but for everyone.”
These comments suggest that the end of Yellowstone is near, despite the rumors of a potential season 6. If the western series ends in season 5, fans of the franchise will not have to worry, as many spin-offs are already in the works!
Season 2 of 1923, a new prequel to 1944, a spin-off on Texas 6666 Ranch, or even an official sequel called The Madison are four new Yellowstone projects that are currently being formalized by franchise creator Taylor Sheridan!
All series from the world of Yellowstone can now be seen on Paramount+, which is also available as part of a subscription to Canal+.
