British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Tuesday the country will not be deterred from supporting Ukraine by Russia’s “irresponsible” rhetoric, after Russian President Vladimir Putin lowered the threshold for a nuclear attack.
“There is irresponsible rhetoric from Russia and this will not prevent our support for Ukraine,” he told reporters at the G20 summit in Brazil.
Putin’s new nuclear doctrine reduces the limits within which Russia could use atomic weapons to respond to attacks that threaten its territorial integrity.
The change came after Ukraine used US ATACMS missiles for the first time to attack Russian territory on Tuesday, taking advantage of permission recently granted by the Biden administration on the 1,000th day of the war.
Addressing this milestone in the conflict, Starmer said Putin was “the author of his own exile” for failing to attend the G20 leaders’ summit for the third year running.
“I repeat (to Putin): end the war, get out of Ukraine,” Starmer said.
