The average monthly income of teaching professionals in public schools, with higher education, reached R$ 4,942 in 2023, according to data from the Brazilian Yearbook of Basic Education 2024, published on Wednesday 13. This value represents 86 % of the income of other professionals who have the same level of education, equal to R$5,747.17.

Considering the last 10 years, this amount paid has increased. In 2013, the average monthly gross income of teachers corresponded to 71% of the income of other professions with the same level of education. In 2022 it was at 82%.
The yearbook, presented by the NGO Todos pela Educação, together with Fundação Santillana and Editora Moderna, brings together public data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the Ministry of Education, as well as analyzes and extracts prepared on the basis of microdata.
Although results have improved, the number of teachers employed in state education networks has fallen to its lowest level in ten years. Meanwhile, the total number of temporary workers grew significantly between 2013 and 2023.
In the state network, in 2013, 68.4% of teachers were competitive. Last year it was 46.5%. Temporary workers, 10 years ago, were 31.1%. In 2023, this percentage jumped to 51.6%, more than half of the teaching staff.
Teachers without higher education
The survey also shows that one in five early childhood education teachers in Brazilian public and private schools does not have a high school diploma.
In early childhood education, in 2023, 20.5% of teachers did not have a high school education. In elementary education, early years (years 1 to 5), this percentage drops to 12.7%. In the last years (from the 6th to the 9th year) it is equal to 8%. In high schools, 3.9% of teachers do not have a degree.
Considering all the teachers in Basic Education, in 2023 12.8% of the teaching staff were not graduates. 84.5% have a degree. Those with an education, but without a degree, the percentage is 2.7%.
