Joining Polly Pocket, Uno and Masters of the Universe, Matchbox is the latest toy line from Mattel Films to receive the cinematic treatment.
Mattel partnered with Skydance on the project, which is based on a line of toy cars that were popular in the 50s and 60s as miniature cars that were small enough to fit, you guessed it, in a matchbox. According to Mattel, a Matchbox car is sold every second.
David Coggeshall, who was behind Paramount Orphan: First death And Lee Daniels’ upcoming untitled thriller about a Netflix acquisition is writing the project’s script. Elizabeth Bassen and Andrew Scannell will direct the Matchbox project for Mattel Films. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger and Aimee Rivera will oversee Skydance Media.
Mattel has a full development roster that includes projects ranging from American Girl and Rock’Em Sock’Em Robots to Thomas & Friends and Wishbone. The company produces live-action for Sony. Barbie The film stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling and was written and directed by Greta Gerwig.
Skydance, on the other hand, remains a big hit in theaters. Top Gun: Maverickwhich recently surpassed $600 million at the domestic box office and has the following two Mission Impossible Project films.
