Adaptation of the musical is now showing in Brazilian cinemas

The long-awaited adaptation of Wickedstarring Ariana Grande like Glinda and Cynthia Erivo like Elphaba, arrived in Brazilian cinemas on November 21, 2024. The production is the first of two parts that take the Broadway success to the big screen, telling the story of two friends at Shiz University, who follow different paths until they meet become the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North.

Directed by Jon M. Chuknown for works such as Crazy Rich Asians and In The Heightsthe film also features a stellar cast, including Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Peter Dinklage and Jeff Goldblumwho plays the Wizard of Oz himself.

The film, which had its first European screening in London on November 18, has already been described by critics as one of the biggest hits of 2024. The film’s soundtrack, an essential part of the adaptation, uses songs from the first act of the original musical 2003, with compositions by Stephen Schwartz and text of Winnie Holzman. Jeff Atmajian revised the original orchestrations of William David Brohnexpanding the orchestra from 23 to 80 musicians. The tracks were recorded at London’s AIR studios, produced by Schwartz alongside Stephen Oremus and Greg Wells.

The dubbed version of the film will feature versions of songs in Portuguese. This was a doubt among fans of the musical, and it was clarified by them thanks to an investigation into stories posted by the voice actresses. Myra Ruiz and Fabi Bang record Portuguese versions of the songs, the two have already played witches in the Brazilian production of the musical at the theater in 2016 and in 2023.
