Amnestying the coup plotters would not only be a deliberate blindness, but a historic mistake.
Army captain and former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) has never hidden his defense of authoritarian regimes. He has already praised Hugo Chávez and every year he pays homage to the military regime (1964-1985), to the years of lead in which the military persecuted and killed Brazilian citizens. Bolsonaro has used attacking the political system as a platform for his political career.
When he went to Jornal Nacional in 2018, running for president for the first time, he said:
“What is Article 142? It is an article of the Constitution that I do not understand as very few understand. When some talk about closing Congress, it is for their freedom of expression.”
It is the article that, four years later, was tortuously removed as the basis for the “coup draft”. This document, which circulated within the government, was one of the legal tools that they wanted to use to legalize a coup.
The vice president on that list, General Hamilton Mourão (Republicanos-RS) and current senator, was placed on reserve months before the elections. After several political demonstrations (which are not the responsibility of the military), he stated that the judiciary should “eliminate” Temer from public life and that the torturer Carlos Alberto Brilhante Ustra is a “hero”.
Anyone who voted for Bolsonaro was in a position to know what he stood for. People can say they’re sorry, they’re wrong, that’s not the case.
Let’s look at a brief history of what happened during the Bolsonaro administration, led with the support of military and political “all-rounders”, those who are willing to participate in any government for a fair price.
In 2019, already president, he stated that “democracy and freedom only exist when the respective Armed Forces want them to”.
In May 2020 he again defended that “we have the people on our side, we have the Armed Forces on the side of the people, for law, order, democracy and freedom”.
In 2021 he continued by saying that “those who decide whether a people will live in democracy or dictatorship are its Armed Forces”.
It was also declared that: “in the hands of the Armed Forces the moderating power. In the hands of the Armed Forces the certainty of guaranteeing our freedom, our democracy and full support for the president’s decisions for the good of the people”. nation.” This is only true in the mind of an authoritarian swindler.
Then came the attacks on the ballot boxes, on the Electoral Tribunal, on the Federal Court, on the minister who reports criminal proceedings against him and his allies in the so-called “hate office”. This process is the basis of all federal police investigations into the former president, the coup, the jewelry, the vaccines, etc.
In 2022, another general was chosen as vice president, Braga Netto. Just like the president and congressman who were sidelined, he also often celebrated the disgusting military coup. This general, I said in a story in The Intercepthe was extremely powerful and was always intelligent. Then Minister of Civil Housing, he led the measures and murderous management of the pandemic. And he went unpunished.
The coup camp, the attempted invasion by the Federal Police and the burning of a bus on the day of Lula’s graduation (PT), the coup camp, the attempt to blow up a fuel truck at Brasilia airport . And of course, the highlight, January 8th. All this happened live, online, at your fingertips, on your mobile phone screen.
The plot and coup attempts took place in broad daylight.
What was not known were the details of the legal structure, the administrative structure that was being developed for a possible post-coup government, the gang of soldiers who planned to kill an elected president and vice president and the president of the Chamber of Deputies Electoral Tribunal . It was not known that Braga Netto abandoned his home to discuss and organize a coup, that he cursed and pressured colleagues at the top of the army to join the coup. We did not know about this and many other details that the Federal Police investigated and made public.
The Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, will receive an investigation full of this and other information that the federal police presented in the indictment of 37 people in the coup case. It will be up to him to pursue the complaint.
On the way to condemning the coup plotters there will be obstacles, cynicism and political groups working for Bolsonaro and his 36 allies. One of the first to join this line is the Army graduate and student of the former president, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans). The governor of the State of Sao Paulo, faced with all these facts, sees nothing but a “narrative without evidence”.
The coup still lives in segments of society. And the more the facts become clear, the more blindness will strike those businessmen, analysts and all kinds of politicians who, like Tarcísio, have lived and created themselves at Bolsonaro’s expense.
Justice, symbolized by a blindfold, has the authority and power to help restore democratic and social normality. Amnestying the coup plotters would not only be a deliberate blindness, but a historic mistake.
Happy holidays and have a good weekend!
