Science fiction movies often have mistakes that go unnoticed: we’re not all scientists, after all. And this escaped us in 1993, but still a major mistake in Steven Spielberg’s classic, Jurassic Park, which all entomologists should have known immediately: the mosquito that we see in the film and which is the source of the “resurrection”. Dinosaurs, not the right species…
Indeed, in the feature film, scientists draw dinosaur blood from a prehistoric mosquito preserved in amber. They then use the DNA from the dinosaur blood to recreate the terrifying creatures that roam the island and end up killing many of the characters.
This is already a scenario that some have considered far-fetched, since mosquito DNA could not have remained intact for 80 million years…
Now that we admit it’s possible, there’s another problem, and it’s inevitable: John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) could never bring dinosaurs to life with this mosquito. In 2013, the prestigious entomologist Joe Conlon, who retired from the Navy, confirmed that mosquitoes did indeed buzz and feed on the blood of dinosaurs back then, but there is a problem with the specimen stored in the billionaire’s cane nest.
“ Existed for about 170 million years– said the scientist in an interview with Business Insider. “Unfortunately, the species depicted in Jurassic Park – Toxorhynchites rutilus – does not feed on blood. In fact, it’s the only type of mosquito that doesn’t.“
Toxorhynchites rutilus is the largest mosquito species known to scientists.
Another big problem
And no, the problems don’t end there! Indeed, according to fan site Jurassic Park Wiki, not only does this insect not bite, but it will also be male because of its spindly antennae. However, among mosquitoes, only the female sucks the blood of other animals…
So here are a few problems that make the premise of the movie itself impossible… but we’ll say we’ve never read it all and continue to wonder. Jurassic Park As if nothing happened!
The iconic film is still available to stream on Prime Video.
