The new device is reportedly in the “early stages” of development
A report published by Bloomberg last weekend claims that Sony would be developing a new portable video game, with the ability to play PlayStation 5 games.
According to the publication, the device is present “initial steps” of development, which means it will still be a few years before it is released, if it actually exists.
“The product aims to expand Sony’s reach and compete with Nintendo for the handheld gaming market, according to people familiar with its development.”Bloomberg said (via VGC).
Recently, Sony updated the PlayStation Portal, allowing it to run PlayStation 5 games via the cloud, as it doesn’t have the ability to run games natively.
A new portable PlayStation would compete with the Switch’s successor, which will be announced by the end of April 2025. It would also compete for space with Microsoft’s portable. Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently confirmed that the company is working on portable video game prototypes, but said the potential launch is still years away.
