Before hitting theaters starring Paul Mescal, Gladiator 2 went through several creative changes over the years
After great success of Gladiator (2000) between public and critics, the director Ridley Scott began to explore possibilities to continue the film. One of them included a script written by Nick Cavesinger of “The Children” and “Red Right Hand,” described as “fucking bad” by Russell Croweinterpreter of Maximus Decimus Meridius.
During an interview with PeopleScott spoke again about the script that Basement he even worked on a sequel, which never happened. However, 24 years later, Gladiator 2 finally got off the ground. The film stars Paul Mescaldirected by Ridley Scott and script written by David Scarpa.
“Russell and I tried this about 18 years ago. I had Nick Cave writing the script and I kept saying [a Russell]: ‘But you’re dead.’ And he said, ‘I know I’m dead. And I want to come back from the dead,'” he recalled.
Then, the filmmaker revealed how Nick Cave found a solution to resurrect Maximus: through a portal. “The only way to do that was to go to another battle and through a dying warrior, he goes back to the warrior’s spirit. So that’s his portal,” he said. Although, Russell Crowe he didn’t like the idea because another actor would play his character.
He said: ‘So this is f***ing bad, is it?’ It didn’t really work.
