The Federal Police (PF) intends to include new names in the investigation into an alleged plot to carry out a coup. To date, according to the report published last Thursday (21), 37 people have been indicted, including former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
Even on the current list there are suspects who were not charged in the final report, as in the case of the lieutenant colonel Rodrigo Bezerra Azevedonicknamed “little black boy” in the military. Azevedo was arrested last week on charges of involvement in a plot to assassinate the president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), vice-president Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) and the minister Alexander de Moraesof the Federal Court (STF).
Further phase of the investigation
According to PF sources interviewed by CNN, the reason for Azevedo’s absence from the list of defendants is that he had not yet made any statements. The legislation governing criminal organizations establishes that a minimum interval of three days must elapse between the summons and the interrogation.
After the testimony, the lieutenant colonel is to be formally charged and a supplementary report will be sent to the STF. Azevedo is named as a member of the scheme and may not be the only one to be included in a second phase of the investigation. Other people involved in carrying out the alleged plan are also under investigation.
The soldier is still detained in Rio de Janeiro and is so far the only target of the Contragolpe operation, carried out last Tuesday (19th), which does not appear as an indictment in the initial investigations. Crimes investigated include violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, criminal organization and attempted coup.
The PF names Bolsonaro as leader and Braga Netto as architect of the coup
Last Friday (22), the federal police identified the general Braga Netto as primarily responsible for organizing the planned coup to keep Bolsonaro in power after his defeat in the 2022 elections. Although Bolsonaro was named the direct beneficiary and commander of the attempt, the responsibility would have been for the execution of Braga Netto’s plan .
Sources close to the investigation, spoken to on Friday, specified that Braga Netto was described as “the thinking head” of the scheme, being responsible for operationalizing the scam. He would conduct strategic meetings and organize decisive events. Prominent among these is a meeting that took place at his residence on November 12, 2022, where details of a plan involving the murder of Lula, Alckmin, and Moraes were reportedly discussed.
