Damian Williams, Manhattan’s top federal prosecutor, said Monday that he plans to resign on Dec. 13, about a month before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.
Edward Kim, currently Williams’ deputy U.S. attorney, will serve as acting U.S. attorney following Williams’ departure.
Williams’ office, known as the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, has an unusual degree of independence from the Justice Department and is known for bringing high-profile cases of financial fraud and public corruption.
Trump, a Republican, said earlier this month that he would nominate former Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Jay Clayton to lead the government.
