“You can’t have a coup with a retired general and half a dozen officers,” says Bolsonaro

The former president spoke for the first time after being indicted by the PF for attempted coup; he said he had studied “all possible measures within the four lines” to prevent Lula from taking office

Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) declared on Monday 25, that he had never discussed the possibility of carrying out a coup to prevent the inauguration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), but that he had studied “all measures possible within the four lines”.

The former palatine held a press conference in the afternoon, when he returned to Brasilia to meet with his lawyers to discuss the next steps after his indictment by the Federal Police (PF) for a coup to stay in power. It was the first time he had spoken since the accident.

“It’s like Temer said today. Temer said something obvious: a coup d’état must have the participation of all the Armed Forces, otherwise it is not a coup d’état. Nobody carries out a coup d’état on a Sunday, in Brasilia, with people who were there with the Bible under their arm and the Brazilian flag in their hand, without even using slingshots or marbles, much less lipstick. There was no commander. […] Let’s get this thing out of our heads. No one is going to stage a coup with a retired general and half a dozen officers. For my part, there was never any talk of a coup d’état,” the former president said.

Bolsonaro continued: “If someone came to talk to me about a coup, I would say: ‘Okay, okay, and the after day (the next day)? What does the world look like before us? Now I have studied all possible measures within the four lines, within the Constitution,” he said.

The former president said the word coup was “never” in his dictionary. “I do not and would never do anything outside the four lines.” For him “it is possible to solve Brazil’s problems within the Constitution”.

In the document sent to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) last Thursday, the 21st, the PF indicted Bolsonaro and 36 other people – including generals Augusto Heleno (former head of the GSI), Braga Netto (former Defense Minister and Bolsonaro’s vice-president) defeated president in 2022), Paulo Sérgio Nogueira (former army commander) and Estevam Cals Theophilo Gaspar de Oliveira (former head of the Army Operations Command Land Army), the former commander of the Navy, Admiral Almir Garnier Santos, the president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, his former aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid and the former Minister of Justice Anderson Torres – for the crimes of violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, of coup d’état and of criminal organization. Overall the sentences reach 28 years in prison.

The PF names Bolsonaro as the “leader” of the criminal organization, which aimed to keep him in power.

The same report emphasizes that Bolsonaro was aware of the plan to kill President Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) and Moraes, in 2022. In addition to cell phone messages, videos, recordings, testimonies of the appeal of Lieutenant Colonel Cid affair, there is a draft coup decree which, according to the PF, was written and corrected by Bolsonaro.

The former president has already denied the thesis on other occasions, stating that he was neither aware of nor consenting to any attempt at a democratic break. On social media, he reacted after being indicted, saying he “cannot expect anything from a team that uses creativity” to report him, as well as attacking Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF.
