Starring in L’Amour ouf, one of the biggest French cinema successes of the year, François Civil continues to be one of the quintessential faces of French cinema. But the Gilles Lelouch film is not the only feature film in which the actor has appeared in cinemas in 2024.
François Civil gave one of his most intense performances this year in the punchy film, inspired by a true story, which aimed to reflect on the treatment of teachers by the national education system. If you missed this score in the cinema, you can now catch it on CANAL+.
François Civil in one of his most intense roles
In Pas de vague, Francois Civil plays Julien, a young and determined college professor. He tries to bond with his class by taking several students under his wing, including the shy Leslie. But this preferential treatment is badly received by some comrades who attribute to the professor other intentions.
Julien accuses himself of harassment and the rumor spreads very quickly. A professor and his student each find themselves in a spiral, and their personal lives are considered a detriment to the truth. In front of the fire-threatening college, one word: no waves…
Director Teddy Lucey-Modeste was inspired by his own story and past as a former professor left to fend for himself after a defamatory denunciation, and François Civil threw himself into the role like never before, he says:
“Francois is an actor who never ceases to impress me on set. He was more than an actor who came to play his role: he was, in fact, so invested and generous that I believe he created a character just like me.
Before filming, he was isolated to learn his lines, and when he returned, he became Julien. Something changed in his gestures, in his speech, in his being. The paradox with Francois is that he is a very identifiable star, but we can project all possible worlds onto him. It stems from his work and the immediate sympathy he evokes.”

Her impressive and intense performance serves the purpose of the director, who was able to rely on the help of co-writer Audrey Dewan to convey her heartfelt cries and the movement to free the words of struggling teachers neglected by their hierarchy.
Francois Civil embodies this political and artistic gesture in front of a cast of impeccable young actors, including Mallory Vaneke (Les Pires), who then finds Gilles Lelouch on the set of L’Amour ouf, in which she plays a teenage version of Jack. The boss was played by Adele Exarchopoulos.
