Actress highlighted how age influenced her artistic vision and commented on the challenges of playing the iconic opera singer

Angelina Jolie revealed how she feels “an older woman” at 49 and how this impacts her work as an actress. In an interview with IndieWireshe discussed her experience playing the legendary opera singer Maria Callas in the new film Mariadirected by Pablo Larraín, which explores the artist’s last days in Paris in the 1970s.

I’m 49 years old. I feel like an older woman now and I embrace that. When I was younger, there were certain pieces of music and certain sounds that matched what I was feeling: I was falling in love, or I was curious about it, or whatever I was going through.

But now, nothing reflects how I feel like opera. Some pieces are so beautiful, full of hope and desire. The opera is bigger. It’s bigger than we allow ourselves to feel on a daily basis.

To bring the iconic Callas to life, Jolie underwent seven months of training, including working on posture, breathing, learning an accent and singing in Italian and French. The director Pablo Larraín highlighted the actress’ dedication: “She had to train a lot. It was challenging to achieve what we call pitchthe ability to hit each note and follow the melody.”

Maria is the third film in Pablo Larraín’s biopic series about remarkable women who faced adversity in the spotlight, succeeding Jackie (2016), about Jackie Kennedyand Spencer (2021), focused on Princess Diana.

Maria arrives in Brazil on February 1, 2025.
