Dwayne Johnson talks about using a special costume to play Maui in live-action Moana

Actor commented behind the scenes of the production after leaked photos from the set generated curiosity

Dwayne Johnson revealed that he wore a special costume to play the demigod Maui in live-action Moana. During an interview with the program Extrathe actor spoke about the subject and explained the transformation process that included hours of daily preparation with the costume.

The actor was asked during the interview if he had gained muscle mass for the role. Although Johnson was pleased that the costume looked realistic, he admitted that he can’t take credit for Maui’s physique.

This is a costume that took a long time to put on,” he said. He celebrated the fact that the public believed in the look.

So I’m so glad you said, ‘You gained mass,’ because when you say, ‘You gained mass,’ it means you failed to notice.

Rumors about the costume began after leaked photos from the filming set, which sparked debates on the internet about the actor’s physique, and whether Johnson was “full-bodied” for the role. The images were captured by paparazzi who, according to the actor, used boats to circumvent the production’s security barriers.

We shot outdoors, and when these photos came out, I thought, ‘Shit, we got caught,’ because we were trying to block the view with walls.

In addition to helping to achieve the demigod’s physique, the costume facilitated the application of Maui’s characteristic tattoos.
