With a surprising result, Sam BenastickMissing for more than a month, he was found in the interior of northeastern British Columbia, Canada. Two workers, during their morning routine, came across Benastick on a service road. Recognized immediately, Benastick had been reported missing since October 19, after not returning from a camping trip.
Benastick was found in difficult conditions: he was leaning on two improvised sticks, using a cut up sleeping bag to keep his legs warm. The adversity Benastick faced began shortly after he moved away from his initial fielding area in Canada. He initially stayed in his car for a few days before deciding to move to a stream near the mountains. There he camped for about 15 days, before descending into a valley where he built a shelter in the dry bed of a stream.
This decision to move away from the most inhabited areas represented an attempt to find means of survival, given the limited resources and adverse climatic conditions of the place. Between limited resources and trying to stay warm, Sam faced extreme conditions that, fortunately, ended in his unexpected rescue.
How did the family members react to the survivor’s reunion in Canada?
Benastick’s family, who had been engaged in a relentless search, finally felt a sense of relief and joy in being reunited with him. Staying at the Buffalo Inn, near the search site, his family members remained engaged in the search campaign for more than two weeks. The manager of the inn, Mike Reidwho has established a personal connection with the family, reports the desperation and apprehension of his parents and brother during this period.
Reid highlighted the emotional impact felt by everyone, especially commenting on the parents’ reaction to learning that their son was alive, despite being weakened. The dedication and collaboration of the local community and search teams were fundamental to the success of the case, even if there were delays.
Several search and rescue teams, including Canadian Rangers, local volunteers and the RCMP, participated in the rescue operation. These teams faced the difficult task of navigating rugged terrain and dealing with the region’s variable climates. Experience and knowledge of the interior of the northern Rockies were essential in finding clues leading to Benastick’s whereabouts.
